At Asian Student Achievement, our finance intern plays a vital role in supporting our organization's financial management and sustainability. By assisting with various finance-related tasks, the intern contributes directly to the smooth operation of our programs and initiatives, ultimately enabling us to fulfill our mission of helping Asians and Asian Americans through the pipeline to leadership. The intern's work in accounts payable and receivable, financial reporting, budgeting, grant management, and other areas helps ensure the efficient allocation of resources and the accurate tracking of financial transactions. By joining our team as a finance intern, individuals can gain valuable hands-on experience in nonprofit finance while making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve. We rely on the dedication and expertise of our interns to help us achieve our goals and fulfill our commitment to creating positive change in the community.

As a nonprofit organization dedicated to positively impacting the community, interns can learn a wide range of valuable skills and gain meaningful experience during their time with us. Here are some key learning opportunities:

  1. Nonprofit Financial Management: Interns will gain a deep understanding of how finances are managed within a nonprofit organization, including budgeting, grant management, and financial reporting. They will learn about the unique financial challenges and opportunities that nonprofits face.

  2. Accounting and Bookkeeping: Interns will receive hands-on experience with accounts payable and receivable tasks and other essential accounting functions. They will learn to process invoices, track expenses, and maintain accurate financial records.

  3. Teamwork and Communication: Interns will work closely with experienced finance professionals and other members of the organization (e.g., finance supervisor), providing them with valuable teamwork and communication skills. Additionally, they will learn how to collaborate effectively to achieve common goals.

Overall, interns can apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations, develop practical skills that will benefit them in their future careers, and make a meaningful impact through their work with our organization.


  • Committing to a minimum of twelve (12) months for the internship with the possibility of extension or promotion

  • Committing to a minimum of 10 hours per week on assigned tasks

  • Working on finance projects in conjunction with the Operations Manager. Interns may be assigned special projects or research tasks related to finance and accounting. This could include researching financial regulations, evaluating financial software solutions, or developing process improvements.

  • Ensuring that the budget is up to date and all forms/files are in order

  • Processing invoices, verifying expenses, and preparing payments to vendors and service providers. The intern will learn to track financial transactions and accurately maintain up-to-date records.

  • Being proactive in promoting ASA coaching and speaking services to universities and more

  • Attending meetings and events when needed

  • Helping to advertise ASA online and offline

  • Being professional in all public, social media, and written communications

  • Other duties as assigned

Salary: $15/hr for 10 hours/week — Note that this will be a salary part-time position; no overtime will be available. The intern must sign a minimum twelve (12) month contract, though they may have the opportunity for extension if performance warrants it.



  • You must be a rising junior or senior in college or a recent graduate and live in Illinois, New Jersey, or Kentucky (either your permanent home or attending university/college in those states). We cannot accept applications from other locations.

  • Must be proficient in Google Sheets and other Google Suite applications and have a commanding knowledge of Google Sheets formulas.

  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Previous finance or accounting experience (preferred but not required)

Non-compete clause: While working for ASA, you cannot work as a volunteer, part-time, or full-time employee with any competing organization or company that offers our business plan.

Non-Disclosure Agreement: As a part of our commitment to protecting sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality, all interns at Asian Student Achievement must sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before beginning their internship. This agreement outlines the expectations and responsibilities regarding handling confidential information, including financial data, donor information, and organizational strategies. By signing the NDA, interns agree to maintain the confidentiality of all proprietary information they may access during their internship and to use it solely to fulfill their duties within the organization. We take the security of our data and the privacy of our stakeholders seriously, and the NDA helps ensure that all team members uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
