Job Summary
The Bridge and Structure Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled work in the repair, maintenance, and replacement of bridges and structures, ensuring all tasks are completed safely and in compliance with established standards and specifications. This role involves operating equipment, performing manual labor, and responding to emergency situations to maintain safe and functional transportation infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Construction Operations
Perform skilled tasks such as carpentry, welding, and concrete finishing.
Remove, install, and repair structural components to erect, replace, or demolish bridges and related structures.
Emergency Operations
Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures as needed.
Operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergency operations.
Clear roadways of debris and provide traffic control during incidents.
Environmental Protection
Apply proper in-stream and environmental protection measures during maintenance and construction activities.
Equipment Operation
Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
Conduct pre-trip inspections and ensure all equipment is properly maintained and safely operated.
Job Safety
Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
Identify safety hazards and recommend improvements.
Adhere to safety regulations (OSHA, VOSHA, MUTCD) and use personal protective equipment appropriately.
Manual Labor
Work as an active member of the crew, performing manual labor to assist with construction, repair, and maintenance of bridges and structures.
Preventative Maintenance
Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on tools and equipment.
Transport personnel, equipment, and materials between work sites.
Requirements
Required Skills & Qualifications
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain compliance thereafter.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor and work at heights, over water, in heavy traffic, and under adverse conditions.
Strong teamwork and independent work capabilities.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations for layout and measurement.
Knowledge of bridge and highway maintenance methods, equipment, materials, and safety practices.
Skill in carpentry, welding, concrete forming, and finishing.
Skill in operating light and medium-duty equipment (dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, etc.).
Proficiency in using hand and power tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Training, education, or experience in Construction or a related field.
Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
Experience fabricating or welding steel components.
Experience building forms, falsework, and performing concrete placement and finishing.
Experience operating light to medium-duty equipment and performing related maintenance.
Certifications such as Flagger or Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements.
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with relevant endorsements.
