Position

Golf Course Superintendent

Job Summary

Responsible for all activities related to the care and maintenance of the golf course, grounds, and equipment. Plan and implement budgets. Hire, train, and supervise staff. Apply agronomic, landscaping, and horticultural principles to ensure that quality standards are consistently achieved and/or exceeded. Maintain a safe, productive work environment and ensure that market position standards are met and the golf course continually improves.

Job Tasks (Duties)

• Maintains all grounds and course maintenance equipment.
• Schedules, trains, supervises, and evaluates all personnel assigned to the department.
• Supervises all planting, fertilizing, and care of turf, plants, shrubs, trees, and other facilities on the golf course.
• Supervises operation of the equipment repair shop.
• Assists in preparation of annual budget for department; takes corrective action as necessary to help ensure that budget goals are met.
• Selects, prepares, and performs proper fertilizer, fungicide, and insecticide programs for all turfgrass.
• Develops, maintains, and fixes drainage, irrigation, and watering systems.
• Maintains the course in proper playing condition.
• Implements and enforces a comprehensive safety program for employees on the course in compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
• Communicates as necessary with the General Manager and golf professionals to discuss conditions of facilities, maintenance plans, scheduled events, and golf.
• Ensure that chemicals, petroleum, and other controlled products are used, stored, and disposed of in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
• Establishes short- and long-range plans for the golf course.
• Oversee all course construction by contractors if needed.
• Conducts daily scouting of all turfgrass surfaces for diseases and is able to correct such problems as they arise.
• Assists with snow removal and covering of greens.
• Plans professional development and training activities for subordinates.

Reports to

General Manager

Supervises

Golf Course Maintenance Crew (12 FTE in season and 4 FTE off-season). Superintendent may structure staff as needed for optimal performance within the operating budget.

Salary

$70,000 to $80,000

Operating Budget

Total Golf Course Budget $800,00 / Superintendent and Staff $312,000

Budget is prepared and managed by the General Manager with input from the Superintendent.

Office Administrator pays all accounts payable.

Educational Requirements

Minimum of an associate degree in Agronomy or in a related field plus experience working with TifEagle greens and Bermuda tees and fairways

Experience Requirements

• Requires knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices, and a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf.
• Requires a high degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem-solving and decision-making.
• Requires excellent oral and written English communication skills; fluency in Spanish helpful but not required.
• Ability to apply agronomic understanding to carry out and administer turfgrass programs and procedures.
• Ability to deal with ever-changing challenges on a minute-by-minute basis and instigate necessary corrections.

Special Requirements

Pesticide applicator's license, or the ability to obtain within sixty days of employment.
